Projects to transform healthcare in north east London have won national recognition. Together with its local partners, NHS North East Clinical Commissioning Group (NEL CCG) saw off competition from across the UK to win five accolades at the annual HSJ Value Awards.
The awards recognise the innovative and ground-breaking work undertaken to improve and develop a range of health and care services across north east London.
The winning projects were:
System or Commissioner Led Service Redesign Initiative of the Year
North East London Child Sexual Abuse Hub (Newham)
Developed in Newham with support local from partners across north east London, this initiative aims to develop and deliver medical assessments and sustained emotional support for children and young people who have experienced child sexual abuse.
Mental Health Service Redesign Initiative of the Year
Culturally Focused IAPT for Communities by Communities (City and Hackney)
This project sought to improve access to psychological therapy and recovery rates among BAME communities by developing small grassroots voluntary sector organisations into fully-accredited providers. NEL CCG and City and Hackney Integrated Care Partnership (ICP) worked closely with Derman, Bikur Cholim, Mind, and Homerton University Hospital.
Paediatric Care Initiative of the Year
Born Well, Growing Well Asthma and Wheeze Project (Tower Hamlets)
Overseen by the Tower Hamlets Together partnership, this project has successfully sought to reduce the number of children and young people admitted to the Royal London Hospital with asthma and breathing problems. The initiative involves NEL CCG and borough’s ICP, Tower Hamlets Council, Barts Health NHS Trust, East London NHS Foundation Trust, Tower Hamlets GP Care Group, and the community voluntary sector.
Digital Clinical Transformation Award
A Digital Recovery Platform for Severe Mental Illness (City and Hackney)
Developed to help people with severe mental illness to plan and manage their own care, this collaborative project is supported by a digital platform that brings all the tools together in one place. NEL CCG and City and Hackney ICP has worked with East London NHS Foundation Trust, The Advocacy Project, and Core Sport, with input from patients.
HSJ Value Pilot Project of the Year
Darzi Seeds of Change Project for the people by the people (Tower Hamlets)
This project sought to redistribute power by enabling local people to identify local needs and co-produce quality improvements plans at the Barkantine practice in the Isle of Dogs. NEL CCG and the borough’s ICP worked collaboratively with the practice, Tower Hamlets Council, East London NHS Foundation Trust Recovery College, Well Communities, University of East London, NHS England Always Events, Tower Hamlets CVS, Mind, Tower Hamlets Healthwatch, and Darzi Fellowship Programme, London South Bank University.
Henry Black, Accountable Officer for NEL CCG, said: “These awards mean so much as they recognise some truly innovative and imaginative work that has a real impact on the lives of patients across north east London. “After such a challenging 18 months, I could not be prouder of everyone involved across the CCG and wider health and care system. The winning projects demonstrate fantastic partnership working and the benefit of working in a more integrated way for our local population.”
This year, the HSJ Value Awards attracted hundreds of entries and the presentation ceremony in Manchester on 2 September was the culmination of a process which seeks to recognise and celebrate outstanding improvement in care quality and efficiency by NHS staff and organisations.
The judges said they were very impressed with the high standards of entries “in what has been one of the hardest and most challenging years to work in the health and care sector”, underlining NEL CCG’s achievement in being declared a winner in five of the 21 categories.
Two other entries involving the CCG and its partners were highly commended by the judges. NHS organisations in north east London were also integral to several other successful entries, including the IT & Digital Innovation of the Year category which was won by OneLondon: Implementing a London-wide shared care record.
This initiative was a collaboration involving London’s five Sustainability and Transformation Partnerships and Integrated Care Systems (including the North East London Health and Care Partnership), three Academic Health Science Networks, London Ambulance Service and the Greater London Authority.
