Mental health support

If you are struggling with your mental health you are not alone. Many people will experience mental health problems at some point in their life and this can be for a variety of reasons.

There are many different types of mental health conditions which can affect people very differently. They include stress, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, PTSD, OCD, schizophrenia and many others. 

In north east London we provide access to a range of mental health support services. The majority of these services are provided by the following NHS trusts:

We also work closely with local doctors, local authorities and local community and voluntary groups across north east London.

Symptoms of mental health problems

There are many different symptoms of mental health problems including: 

  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Fear and panic
  • Low mood
  • Sadness and depression
  • Feeling lonely
  • Grief after bereavement or loss
  • Anger
  • Loneliness in older people
  • Signs of an anxiety disorder
  • Hallucinations and hearing voices

If you are experiencing any of the above and it is affecting your day to day life, you may want to think about getting some help.

Where to get support

If you are struggling with your mental health, there are many organisations who can help you. 

NHS support: 

  • Speak to your GP if you need help with your mental health. They can advise you on where to get the right support and refer you to local services if you need to.
  • You can visit NHS 111 online. They will ask you to answer a few simple questions about your mental health symptoms and will be able to advise on what to do next.
  • If you need urgent mental health support you can speak to a free and confidential NHS mental health crisis line, open all day every day. Find your local NHS crisis line here.
  • You can also visit a local mental health crisis café for support.  

Support from other organisations:

  • The Samaritans are there to listen at any time of the day or night. You can talk to them confidentially about anything that’s troubling you, no matter how difficult. Call free on 116 123.
  • Shout offers confidential 24/7 crisis text support for times when you need immediate assistance. 
    Text SHOUT to 85258.
  • Mental health charity, Mind, has a range of useful information and resources for a variety of mental health conditions.
