Positive Behaviour Support, or PBS for short, is a person-centred approach for supporting people which focuses on quality of life and well-being.
The British Institute of Learning Disabilities (2017) says that: “Behaviour that challenges always happens for a reason and may be the person’s only way of communicating an unmet need. PBS helps us understand the reason for the behaviour so we can better meet people’s needs, enhance their quality of life and reduce the likelihood that the behaviour will happen”.
You can watch the An Introduction to PBS video by Bild to get a better understanding of challenging behaviours and how positive behaviour support can help. Bild also have some great resources for helping to understand behaviour and information about their positive behaviour support helpline service.
NEL is currently procuring PBS support for people with learning disabilities and autism and further information will be posted here.
