Monthly community phlebotomy pilot update

April 2022

Welcome to the April community phlebotomy pilot update. Previous updates can be found on our website along with a full list of phlebotomy services and booking details across BHR.

Sites and capacity

During March, we saw a sharp increase in demand in all 3 boroughs, with 32,442 blood tests carried out – an increase of 6,575 compared to February. This may be due to increase in GP activity as public concerns around Covid-19 have reduced.  We will continue to monitor these figures closely to ensure we have capacity where we need it most.

Since the beginning of this month we have been providing a dedicated Phlebotomy service in Havering for people with a Learning Disability aged 12 and above, who are residents of Barking & Dagenham, Havering, or Redbridge. This service runs from Raphael House, Romford, every Tuesday from 1230-1545 and provides both easier and supported access to blood testing for people with a Learning Disability, with longer appointment times and staff trained in LD awareness.

We are pleased to share that from 4 May, this service will also be offered at Hainault Health Centre, Redbridge, every Wednesday 12.30pm – 3.45pm.

We plan to have dedicated phlebotomy clinics in Barking & Dagenham operating from June 2022.

A blood test with the Learning Disability Service can booked by calling 0300 300 1351 or via email:

Local GPs have been communicated with about the service as have our BHR stakeholders via our weekly BHR stakeholder update.

A full list of community and GP phlebotomy services along with a link to book an appointment is available on our website.

Last month we advised that BHRUT were having a new IT system installed on 25, 26 and 27April which would have had a minor impact on our services.

Please note this installation has now been cancelled with a new date to be confirmed – we will keep you updated.

Current data

32,442 blood tests were carried out across BHR community and GP sites in March 2022 – 6,575 more than in February 2022.

  • 87% of appointments were carried out within 1 week from the date of booking.
  • 11% of appointments were carried out within 2 weeks from the date of booking.
  • 2% of appointments were carried out between 2 and 4 weeks from date of booking (patient choice).
  • We are pleased to report that we continue to see a decrease in numbers of those not attending their appointments.
  • There continues to be same or next day availability for a blood test at the majority of NELFT sites.

Patient survey results

Patients continue to pass on their feedback via our survey, with over 95.4% of patients reporting back a good experience in March. We continue to learn from these responses in order to shape the service into one that best meets the needs of the local communities we serve.

  • We continue to share our patient survey, which includes all of our sites, which can be completed online via a text and email link once the appointment has finished.
  • The survey is now fully compatible with those who are accessing it via a mobile phone
  • We continue to look at ways to reach those who do not have web/mobile phone access to ensure that feedback is representative.
  • We continue to share updates and the link to our dedicated email address in our local and NEL wide stakeholder updates to invite local feedback.
  • A frequently updated list of all sites and provision is available on the NHS North East LOndon website, as well as on the NELFT website and is linked to from the BHRUT website.
  • The above mentioned list of sites is also shared regularly with practice colleagues for patients.
