Monthly community phlebotomy pilot update

June 2022

Welcome to our penultimate community phlebotomy pilot update.

It’s hard to believe a nearly whole year has passed since we embarked on this pilot.  Borne out of the recognition for a better service for the communities we serve, partners have worked tirelessly to ensure the provision of this new service gives the residents of BHR easy access, easy booking/cancellation and choice of site.

Twelve months and a pandemic later, we are pleased to say that the feedback on this provision continues to be overwhelmingly positive.

We thank the dedication of our teams and partners in continuing to make this pilot a success.  We will update you further on next steps in our final update.

Previous updates can be found on our website along with a full list of phlebotomy services and booking details across BHR.

Sites and capacity

As expected we saw increased demand in all boroughs throughout May, following a decline during April due to the Easter and bank holidays.

Since the beginning of April we have been providing a dedicated Phlebotomy service in Havering for people with a Learning Disability aged 12 and above, who are residents of Barking & Dagenham, Havering, or Redbridge.

We are delighted to confirm that all of our Learning Disability specific phlebotomy services across BHR are now in operation:

Thames View Health Centre, Barking and Dagenham IG11 0LH
Thursdays 12-30 to 3-45 pm

Raphael House, Havering, RM1 4HP
Tuesdays 12-30 to 3-45 pm

Hainault Health Centre, Redbridge IG7 4DF
Wednesday 12-30 to 3-45 pm

To book a blood test with the Learning Disability Phlebotomy service please call 0300 300 1351 or email: LDbookabloodtest@nelft.nhs.uk

This information has been shared with Local GPs via our weekly GP bulletin and we continue to share information about the service via our weekly BHR stakeholder update.

A full list of community and GP phlebotomy services along with a link to book an appointment is available on our website.

On 13,14 and 15 June, BHRUT installed a new IT system.  To mitigate for any reduction in appointment availability due to this action, extra phlebotomy chairs have been made available at Raphael House, Havering, Monday – Friday throughout June and July.

Current data

Please note, as mentioned above, there was increased activity in all boroughs during May. 27,331 blood tests were carried out across BHR and community GP sites during May.

  • 79.21% of appointments were carried out within 1 week from the date of booking.
  • 19.37 of appointments were carried out within 2 weeks from the date of booking.
  • 1.37% of appointments were carried out between 2 and 4 weeks from date of booking (patient choice).

Patient survey results

Patients continue to pass on their feedback via our survey, with over 90% of patients reporting back a good experience in May. We continue to learn from these responses in order to shape the service into one that best meets the needs of the local communities we serve.

And finally

Thank you again for all of your support over the past 12 months and we look forward to sharing with you some highlights of the pilot evaluation in our final update.
