While type 1 diabetes cannot be prevented, type 2 diabetes is largely preventable through lifestyle changes.
The Healthier You NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme, also known as the Healthier You programme, identifies people at risk of developing type 2 diabetes and refers them onto an evidence-based lifestyle change programme.
The Healthier You programme is available both as a face-to-face group service and as a digital service. When referred into the programme, people are free to choose between the two.
The free programme runs over 9 months and can help you reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes through healthy lifestyle changes.
Find out if you’re at risk of developing type 2 diabetes by doing any of the following:
If you are at risk, you may be eligible for referral to the Healthier You NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme by your GP Practice.
To be eligible to join this programme you must be at risk of developing type 2 diabetes, aged between 18 and 80 years old and:
If you meet the eligibility criteria you can get a referral through your GP practice. If you are unsure if you are eligible your GP will be able to check your risk and advise you.
