About this service

Social care services are there to help you or your loved ones if they are finding it hard to manage day-to-day tasks without support. This may be because of an illness or disability.

There is a wide range of social care support out there to help you to live your life as independently as possible, depending on your needs. You can arrange social care for yourself privately, or you can ask your local council for advice and support.

Types of social care and support include:

Social care and support is usually paid for by the people who need services and their families, or by your local council’s social care services department.

Who can use this service

If you or someone you know needs help with day-to-day tasks and is finding it hard to manage without support, you can ask your local council for a free social care needs assessment

An assessment is a conversation about your needs, how these affect your wellbeing and what you want to be able to do in your daily life. The assessment is to decide whether you need support from social care, and what other support might be helpful.

If you have someone in your family or a friend who looks after you, they can also have a carer’s assessment to see what support they can get.
