About this service​

Around half of all pregnancies are unplanned and around as 1 in 3 women in the UK have had an abortion (termination of pregnancy) at some time in their life.

NHS abortion services can be provided up to 23 weeks and 6 days of pregnancy.

There are two types of abortion method; a medical abortion involves taking medication to end a pregnancy, while a surgical abortion is a procedure to remove pregnancy tissue from the uterus. More information on the types of abortion can be found on the NHS website for England.

A healthcare professional can explain the specific risks and benefits of each procedure based on your individual circumstances. An abortion is your choice and there is support available if you want to talk through your options.

How to access this service

  • You can get confidential support and an abortion on the NHS.
  • To book an appointment, you can contact a local abortion service directly, or be referred by your GP.
  • Local abortion services and how to contact them are listed by borough below.
  • You can choose a location that is closest to you (this may not be in the borough in which you live) or one where you feel most comfortable attending, in any borough.
  • All providers offer pills by post (if you are suitable for this treatment) which is a medical abortion. If you require an in-person appointment the first available appointment may be in one of their other locations.
