Stoke Newington Library in Hackney has been approved for a £4.4 million upgrade during a Cabinet meeting. The renovation will see repairs made to the interior and exterior of the Grade 2 listed building which was built in 1892 and houses Stoke Newington’s World War One Memorial.

This change is part of a new library strategy focussed on ensuring that Hackney libraries deliver a sustainable service that aligns with the modern digital world, ensure accessibility for all and can properly cater to the needs of each resident. This also includes:

  • hosting partnerships with local organisations to increase support for reading
  • providing information for those seeking unemployment and training opportunities
  • offering study space for learners and young people
  • having activities to promote good health and make informed choices about wellbeing
  • organising events where older residents can socialise, meet new friends and volunteer to limit isolation and reduce loneliness
  • extending opening hours

Stoke Newington Library’s renovation is expected to be completed by 2025.
