Residents are being invited to come together in north east London to try a new sport or activity, access health advice and connect with neighbours at the free Community Games, following a successful opening event earlier this month.
Hosted by North East London Cancer Alliance, the aim is to get as many people as possible along who are living with cancer – and their families and friends – to help them recover from their cancer treatment and improve their quality of life.
The first event took place at Mile End Leisure centre saw people taking part in fun and informal activities, which included boxing, netball, axe throwing, football and racket sports, in a fun and inclusive environment.
The next two community games are happening in Haggerston Park, Hackney and Barking Sporthouse & Gym on the 28 June and 13 September both between 11am and 3pm. They are designed for all ages and abilities and offer the opportunity to try out different activities.
Those taking part will be able to meet people, access free health advice such as blood pressure checks and smoking cessation and take first steps towards better physical and mental health.
The events intend to break down barriers that often prevent people from engaging in sport or physical activity such as feeling nervous, unfit, or unsure where to start.
Sarita Yaganti, Programme Lead for Personalised Cancer Care at North East London Cancer Alliance, said:
“We know that starting something new can be daunting — especially if you’ve been out of the loop with exercise or aren’t sure what’s available locally,”.
“Community Games are all about removing those barriers. There’s no judgment, just opportunities to try things out, meet friendly faces, and take positive steps towards a healthier life.
“Whether it’s a short walk, a gentle stretch, a health MOT, or a chat over tea, there’s something for everyone.”
The games are free for all and aim to inspire health and happiness through physical activity and support people to take their first steps towards a healthier lifestyle, or just try something new.
