Homerton University Hospital (HUH) will become the first NHS Hospital Trust to have ambulances that are fully electric by the end of 2024. The move comes after a successful trial of an electric ambulance in November 2021.
ERS Medical, health and social care transport provider, will be providing the fleet of fully electric ambulances to HUH for its non-emergency patient transport services. It will begin supplying the vehicles in the upcoming months.
The scheme follows NHS’s commitment to net zero of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 2040, but with a reduction by 80 percent between 2028 and 2032. In the trial of the electric ambulance, 64 kilograms of CO2 was saved. This is equivalent to a diesel ambulance travelling 2300 miles. It is estimated that each electric ambulance will save 4,000 kilograms of CO2 emissions every year.
