Hackney Council will host an online community meeting on Tuesday 29 March from 4.30-6.30pm, to provide residents with information about how they can support Ukrainian refugees arriving in the UK. Information on the Homes for Ukraine scheme will also be provided.
The war in Ukraine began on 24 February 2022 and since then nearly 10,000 visas have been issued to Ukrainians with family ties to the UK.
Homes for Ukraine is a scheme that allows Ukrainians who do not have a family connection to the UK to stay in the country for 12 months, as well as work and claim benefits. More than 150,000 people have expressed an interest in hosting refugees through the programme, including many in Hackney. The first set of refugees who have been accepted into the scheme will arrive this week..
The upcoming meeting will focus on the support – including accommodation and fundraising – that local people are able to offer. Residents, organisations and community representatives who wish to attend should register.
