Hackney Council’s Planning Committee has given the green light to develop two new GP premises for local residents: the Portico building in Clapton and a Council-owned site in Stoke Newington. This is in a partnership between the Council and the NHS.
Lower Clapton Group Practice, with more than 15,000 patients, will move to the unused Clapton landmark, the Portico building, where it will upgrade to become a local health centre. Spring Hill Practice, with over 14,500 patients, will now be based on Belfast Road in Stoke Newington. The location will be a two-storey surgery that was previously occupied by Victorian industrial premises. The site has been vacant for over five years.
Both practices have been due for an upgrade. The Lower Clapton Group is currently at a site that is outdated and too small, while Spring Hill is operating out of two converted flats and using a portacabin for its reception. The new buildings will provide more space and better facilities for patients, as well as recruit and retain more staff.
