What is Tirzepatide (Mounjaro)?
Tirzepatide is a type of weight loss medication that has the brand name Mounjaro. It mimics gut hormones released after eating, helping to reduce appetite and slow stomach emptying, supporting weight loss.
Can I get it on the NHS if I live in north east London?
We are working to make Tirzepatide available to those at the highest risk of obesity-related health conditions in north east London.
From October 2025, GPs will be able to refer some high-risk patients to a new weight management service, where weight loss medication like Tirzepatide can be used where appropriate. The service is not open yet.
Who is eligible?
To qualify for Tirzepatide on the NHS, patients must have BMI of 40 or higher AND have at least four of the following conditions:
- Type 2 diabetes
- High blood pressure
- Heart disease
- Obstructive sleep apnoea
- Abnormal blood fats (dyslipidaemia)
What if Tirzepatide isn’t right for me?
Not everyone who meets the criteria will be prescribed Tirzepatide. Some may choose not to take it, or it may not be clinically appropriate.
If it is not right for you or you don’t meet the criteria there are other NHS-supported weight loss programmes in north east London:
- NHS Digital Weight Management Programme
- NHS low-carb diet for Type-2 diabetes
- NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme
