What’s changing?

Following the global pandemic, the NHS developed temporary specialist services to support people affected by the long-term effects of COVID-19 (commonly known as long COVID services). These services have been available to residents across north east London since December 2020.

From April 2025, NHS North East London long COVID services will come to an end.  Patients can expect support on a case-by-case basis, and as their condition requires through their GP.  Usual referral routes to other specialist services will be available as well as advice on how patients can self-care for low level symptoms of long COVID.

Why is the service changing?

The national funding for specialist long COVID services is ending in April 2025. A review showed that referrals into the service have significantly reduced.  The NHS and local government are tasked with reaching financial sustainability and increased productivity, which means we have a responsibility to spend money efficiently. This meant it was necessary to review and assess the Long Covid service, which was found to be to not meet patient need nor providing value for money.

How can I get support with long COVID?

We remain committed to ensuring residents receive the care they need, and we are working closely with local healthcare providers to ensure current patients will be directed to the most relevant services from April.

Anyone experiencing ongoing symptoms of Long Covid should contact their GP, who can assess their condition and refer them to the most appropriate support services.

For further information on long COVID, you can read our guidance on managing long COVID.

Will new patients with long COVID still be able to access support?

New patients presenting with symptoms of long COVID will continue to be identified and supported through primary care and usual referral routes to appropriate specialist services.

If you are experiencing ongoing symptoms of long COVID, you should contact your GP, who can assess your condition and refer you to the most suitable support services available in your area. For more information, please contact your GP.

What if I am already receiving long COVID support?

Patients currently using the service will conclude their care with their provider and be discharged back to their GP.  They will receive information and signposting to appropriate alternative services.

What specialist care is available for long COVID?

Support for long COVID patients is available through a range of services, depending on individual need. This includes GP and Primary care services, Community and Rehabilitation services (including physiotherapy, occupational therapy and mental health support), and Specialist Referrals.

What has been done to assess the impact of this change?

An Equality, Quality, and Impact Assessment was conducted with service providers to understand how the change might affect patients. This assessment identified a small number of residents with ongoing complex healthcare needs, and steps are being taken to ensure they receive the necessary support.
