What are entry-level roles?

Entry-level roles don’t require experience or qualifications and can be the first step in a career across a variety of roles in the NHS. Entry-level roles can help you start your NHS career if:

  • you’re leaving school or education
  • changing careers
  • returning to work after a long absence

These roles will help you learn, train and develop skills to build a career in the NHS with purpose, security and opportunities for progression.

What are some examples of entry-level roles?

Some examples of entry-level roles include:

  • administrators
  • support workers for medical and clinical teams
  • receptionists
  • security officers
  • drivers
  • nursery assistant

How do I find entry-level roles?

The NHS uses a banding system to determine how much you’re paid and what you need to do in your role.

Many entry-level roles are advertised as between band’s 2 and 4. The higher the band the is, the more you’ll be paid and the more responsibility you’ll have.

You can search NHS jobs for entry-level band 2 to 4 roles.

NHS workers in north east London will receive a London living allowance depending on where they’re based, this includes:

  • 20% of your salary in inner London (up to £8,712)
  • 15% of your salary in outer London (up to £5,735)
  • 5% of your salary if you’re close to London (up to £2,122)

What skills will I need for an entry-level role?

The skills you need for an entry-level role in the NHS depend on the role you take up. However, we have created a glossary of some of the key terms.
